"Excellent TV for an excellent price..." 2010-01-09
By S. Olson (SoCal)
Okay, so I'm not going to write 20 paragraphs on why I like this TV vs. any other one I've tried. What I will say is that TV has a beautiful picture and looks fantastic with HD content. My PS3 games in 1080p make me drool just a little...

I originally purchased this TV at Sam's Club based on the price (Amazon was higher at the time), but that was a complete nightmare that still does not have a satisfactory resolution yet - Long Story. I now own this TV via Amazon and I'm very happy with the purchase. I bought it for $1,021.00 with free shipping and not tax from Amazon and I suggest you wait to buy it if the price is higher than that and from a third party vendor. Amazon rocks! and their customer service is superior to many others I've dealt with.

The remote is solid, picture is crisp, even during faster screen activity (240 Hz), and setting the functions (audio, video) is a piece of cake. Don't get blinded by name brands like Samsung and Sony... Yes, they make quality TV's, but you can get more for you money buying a Vizio and be just as happy with the performance.

Of course after writing this positive review, my TV will burn up tomorrow and never work again...lol. I can only comment on how awesome the TV is after owning it for a week. Time will tell I suppose, but the Square Trade warranty I purchased will give me comfort just in case. =)

 "Vizio's best non-LED tv." 2009-12-10
By John Matrix
I bought this tv about a week ago and have been really pleased. I previously had a 37" sharp 720p 60hz, and did not like it at all. Well after much research I had narrowed it down the Samsung LN46B750. Only problem is that tv is $1500+ dollars. So I wanted another choice and researched and for the price and quality, this Vizio is a no brainer. This XVT is Vizio's best model other than their new 55" LED.

Appearance: It looks really nice. Simple, clean, black and silver. Some people hate that the vizio light will stay orange when the tv turns off but its not really noticeable and doesn't bother me at all.

Sound: Definitely better than my old Sharp, but still nothing to write home about. I have some really nice Logitech 2.1 speakers I use if i'm really wanting the theatre experience but the built in speakers are fine.

Picture quality: This is where I was a HUGE stickler. I wanted at least 120hz, 1080p, and 4ms response time as I'm a gamer. Well this tv has all of those and even goes to 240 with the scanning backlight. The smooth motion when enabled (recommended low) is a little jarring at first, but you quickly get used to it. Not only does smooth motion help with blur, it seems to just make the entire image on screen more crisp whether its moving or not. Very pleased. Watching Dexter on showtime hd was AMAZING! The detail in the intro is just jaw dropping. And this is only in 1080i. Xbox 360 really shows how crisp it can really get. I thought Dexter details were amazing, I hadn't seen nothing until I popped in Modern Warfare 2. Its a sight to be seen. The smooth motion works beautifully on videogames. No problems with blurring at all. Very rarely will there be any judder problems and even when you see a hiccup its for like 1 second, my wife never notices it. Hopefully getting a PS3 soon and check out blurays. But if the other content is any indication of what to expect, it will be great. I just can't imagine it getting any better. We'll see.

Cons: As with all tv's there are always some quirks. I did notice the faintest of flash lighting at the top of the screen in a tiny small area. This is a problem with MANY LCD tvs and is really only noticeable when the screen is completely black, even then its barely noticeable. I only notice it cause I set out looking for these things. Compared to the flash lighting and clouding I've seen on some tvs, this one if by far and away one of the better. DO NOT at all let this problem scare you as all tv's are different and some may not have it at all. PLUS most tvs need 50-100 hours of break in time to fully get everything warmed up so most likely it will fade. Even still my wife can't see what I'm talking about lol.

Conclusion: For the price and quality, bar none the best deal you are gonna find for a while. I was able to snag mine at SAMS for $997. 360 & PS3 users, you will not be disappointed. Will update after I've had it for a while!

UPDATE: 12/28/2009

Well I got a PS3 for christmas and got to see if blurays were any better than hd cable I had been viewing. I have to admit it looks incredible and does indeed look better. I got my wife the Harry Potter bluray collection, and we popped them in, absolutely CRYSTAL CLEAR. Sharp as can be, great colors. So yes, it did indeed get better than I thought. The tv handled the bluray beautifully with its motion and the colors looked dead on.

Also the flashlighting I mentioned earlier in my review has subsided quite a bit and I have to really set there and stare at the blank screen to even be able to see it, so that is good news as well.

Once again I 100% recommend this TV! Thanks for reading and hope I was a bit helpful in your search.

"Amazing Picture for the price" 2009-12-07
By M. Good (CAE, SC)
I bought this tv (VIZIO SV471XVT) today, I have been holding out from buying a new tv but the Christmas spirit made me do it.....I tell you going from a 32" low def tv to a 47" high def tv is truly amazing and took some adjusting on my part. Bought a Samsung BD-P1590 which has built in netflix streaming which was also nice. For the price I can't say anything bad about this tv or the picture (I have not found anything yet at least).

 "AWESOME" 2010-01-16
By N. Brinkman
I just got this tv delivered from amazon today, and my mind has been properly blown. Granted, I was switching to this from a standard tube set, but this tv is incredible. I looked around a lot before the purchase and was weary at first, but I'm very happy I went with this tv. I went with the 3 year extended warranty to add peace of mind, and still saved money compared to other brands. I'm sold on Vizio.

 "Love this TV!" 2010-01-06
By Aaron Brueckman (Cincinnati, OH USA)
This TV has been precisely what I wanted. I did a LOT of research before purchasing this TV, and kept coming back to Vizio. My brother-in-law has an older Vizio plasma, and I was always impressed with it, so I initially looked at Vizio's anyway, but wanting to make sure I did my due-diligence, I studied just about everything I could. Even ignoring the prices of different TVs, I kept coming back to the Vizio brand based on the quality reviews I heard/read, and the technical offerings for each of their products. Once you add in the relatively low prices for Vizios compared to anything else on the market, it became a no-brainer.

I was a bit skeptical about ordering an HDTV over the internet, but everything worked out perfectly. The delivery guys even helped get it out of the box and up onto my TV stand. It has worked perfectly so far since day one, and we use it quite heavily. My wife had foot surgery the same week the TV was delivered, so she was off her feet, and spent a lot of time with the TV on the first few weeks, and yet we've had not one single problem yet.

The only complaint I have with this unit has to do with Sound. The built-in speakers themselves are just fine, and have good volume. But I have a surround sound stereo system, and getting the two synched up was VERY difficult at first. Ultimately, it came down to adjusting some settings in the stereo, and nothing was necessarily the TVs fault, so this is quite likely something that might be experienced with all HDTVs (never had this problem with my old SDTV). At first, we were having a lot of lag issues with the stereo not matching up with the TV signal, or with Blu-rays/DVDs. Now that we've got it sorted out, everything sounds great. I do have to leave the TVs internal speakers turned off though, as they are still just slightly out-of-sync with the stereo system. But the stereo pushes enough sound that it really makes no difference.

Overall, I'm SO pleased with this purchase, and highly recommend this TV.

"Great TV - but BAD plastic smell" 2010-01-04
By G. Traveis (Los Gatos, CA United States)
I loved the VIZIO SV421XVT. The picture quality was great. The sound, using the internal speakers was kind of hit-or-miss depending on how it interpreted the Surround encoding. I ended up compensating by turning off the advanced Audio features. I missed a feature that our older Panasonic LCD had - Closed Caption on Mute. It's a great feature and it comes in handy when a program is on and a call comes in.

Once again, I found the picture quality to be great! But there was one aspect of this TV that forced me to return it - The TV emits a nasty hot plastic odor when running. We gave it two whole weeks to "air out" but it never got any better. The plastic stink was the first thing that I would smell when walking into the room. I finally got sick of it and sent it back.

After, I did a sniff check of other >40" LCD TV's. I found that all of the Vizio's had the plastic stink, as did Toshiba. Sony, Sharp and Panasonic had no plastic smell at all.

Samsung TV's had a mild plastic smell, but the Samsung LED LCD TVs had no plastic smell at all - maybe the ultra-thin chassis doesn't use the same kind of plastic.

So, if you are thinking of getting a Vizio, find a new one on display and give the top venting a quick sniff. Most people don't have problems with the smell, but if you do, you will want to avoid these TVs.

"Pop of Death after 2 years!" 2009-12-27
By J. B. Rhodes (New Jersey)
I have had my 42" Vizio 1080p for just over two years. I LOVED the tv when it worked. The picture and sound was great. One morning I woke up and went to turn the tv on when I realized it was dead. No warning, no nothing. The tv would turn on and off, but I had no picture and no sound. After some research I discovered this is a common problem with Vizio. Do your research before you buy. I will never buy another Vizio bc now I am stuck buying another LCD 2 years later. What a waste of money.

PS-When I called Vizio they were no help. They knew exactly what our problem was, but because it was over 2 years couldn't help us. They need to fix this problem on this end and not make tvs that die after a few years.
